Using IPMI Supermicro

This article explains how to use IPMI Supermicro for remote server management.

IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) is a dedicated server remote administration interface.

This guide covers how to use IPMI access for remote server management on Supermicro platforms.

IPMI Supermicro is a built-in remote management interface for Supermicro platform servers, providing out-of-band server administration, including power management, hardware monitoring, a remote KVM-over-IP console, and virtual media for OS installation.

After connecting to the IPMI of a Supermicro platform server, you can:

  • Monitor the health and performance of the server hardware.
  • Remotely power on, power off, or reboot the server.
  • Access the remote KVM-over-IP console.
  • Mount ISO images and install or reinstall the OS.
  • Configure the BIOS and boot order without physical access.
  • View hardware event logs and system information.
  • Troubleshoot server issues even when the OS is unavailable.

Logging in to IPMI on Supermicro Servers and Managing Server Status

  1. In the browser address bar, enter the IPMI IP address. In the login dialog box that appears, enter the information you received, along with the IP address in your email after submitting a support ticket. Click Login.

  3.  Here you can perform the following operations:

    • Reset Server – a hard reboot of the server. This is recommended only when the server is unresponsive, and a normal OS reboot is not possible.
    • Power Off Server – Immediate – powers off the server immediately. Without a graceful OS shutdown.
    • Power Off Server – Orderly Shutdown – a graceful server shutdown. The OS shuts down gracefully.
    • Power On Server – turns the server on.
    •  Power Cycle Server – a graceful server reboot. 

Connecting to the Server Console

Caution! This is recommended for advanced users only!

  1. To connect to the console, install Java Runtime.
  2. To download Java, accept the cookie settings on this website (Accept all) and click Download Java for Desktops.

  3.  To run Java, click Install to agree to the licensing terms.

  4.  If Java starts successfully, the following window will appear → click Close.

  5.  Next, in Supermicro IPMI, select Remote Control → Console Redirection.

  6.  To launch the redirection console and manage the server remotely, click Launch Console.

  7.  A warning window may appear when the console starts → click Continue.

  8.  A confirmation window may also appear when the console starts. Check the box next to "I accept the risk and want to run this application" → click Run.

Connecting an Image

When working with the console, you can connect an ISO disk image. The server will treat it as an external USB drive containing a disk. This disk can be booted.

  1. To run the image, click Virtual media → CD-ROM Image.

  2. Select the type of image to connect ISO File.
  3. Specify the path to the image file on your computer. Connect the image file to the server by clicking Plug in.
  4. Close Virtual Storage Manager by clicking OK.

Virtual Keyboard

Not all key combinations can be entered from a regular keyboard. They may be the same as those used by the OS on your local computer.

  1. Therefore, you need to run iKVM/HTML5 and manage the server remotely in the management console.

  2.  To use macros (frequently used keyboard shortcuts) in the management console, select Macro → Macro → select the desired combination.

  3. Selecting a combination will have the same effect as pressing the same combination on a real keyboard connected to the server.
  4. If the built-in macros (key combinations) are insufficient, you can use the virtual keyboard:

We recommend using the dedicated IPMI View utility from SuperMicro instead of a browser. This utility is more user-friendly.

Potential Issues

Attention! If you are unable to connect to the KVM via IPMI and receive an error (Connection error or other error) when using the web interface or console, please create a technical support ticket. Our technical specialists will assist you and restart the IPMI module.

Error 500 Internal Server Error

This error may occur when connecting via the insecure HTTP protocol. Change the protocol to https in the address bar → try logging in to IPMI again.

Java Application Blocked

When using the IPMI console for the first time on a computer, you may receive a blocking notification from the Java Runtime. This is a triggering of the Java security system.

  1. Add the IPMI address to the exceptions for the console to launch normally.
  2. To configure Java, run Configure Java: by default, Start → Programs → Java.

  3.  In the settings, open the Security tab → click the Edit Site List... button next to the scrolling list.

  4.  Click Add → enter your IPMI address in the field, for example, http://IP_IPMI or https://IP_IPMI, where IP_IPMI is the IP address of your server → click OK.

  5.  When connecting via the http protocol, a warning will appear → click Continue:

  6.  The IPMI address has been added to the exceptions for normal console startup → click OK.
