Using a Microphone via Windows Remote Desktop (RDP)

This article explains how to enable and use a microphone during a Remote Desktop (RDP) session on Windows.

Due to incorrect server settings, the microphone may not connect from the local computer to the remote computer. This guide describes the following settings and how to fix this issue.

1. Configuring the Device Redirection Service

To configure the Device Redirection service, follow these steps:

  1. Open the dialog box on your device by pressing Win + R (Windows).
  2. In the window that appears, run gpedit.msc on the local device from which you will connect to the remote terminal.

  3. Please note that you must have administrator rights on the local computer. Next, follow the path: Local Computer PolicyAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsRemote Desktop ServicesRemote Desktop Session HostDevice Redirection.
  4. Enable Allow audio recording redirection and Allow audio and video playback redirection.

  5. Apply the same policy to the remote server. The service must be enabled on both the local server and the server you are connecting to.

2. Enabling the Windows Audio Service

To enable the Windows Audio service on both the local and remote computers, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Services.4
  2. In the window that opens, scroll down and find the Windows Audio service.

  3. Right-click the service and select Properties.

  4. Select the Automatic startup type to ensure the service starts automatically.
  5. Start the Windows Audio service.

3. Updating Registry Settings

To update registry settings, follow these steps:

  1. Open a dialog box on your device by pressing Win + R (Windows).
  2. In the window that appears, type regedit.
  3. To run as administrator, press "CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER".
  4. Navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal ServerWinStationsRDP-Tcp.
  5. Find the fDisavleAudioCapture file.

  6. Double-click this file and change the value to eight zeros in the window that opens.

4. Adding the Remote Desktop Services Role to the Server

To add the Remote Desktop services role to the server, follow these steps:

  1. Type Server Manager in the search bar.

  3. In the menu that appears, click Add Roles and Features.

  4. In the window that opens, click Next.

  5. In the Installation Type section, select Role-based or feature-based installation → click Next.

  6. In the Server Selection section, check Select a server from the server pool → select the server and click Next.

  7. In the Server role section, select the Remote Desktop Services role and click Next.

  8. Then select features in the Features section and simply click Next.

  9. In the Remote Desktop Services section, click Next.

  10. In the Role Service section, select Remote Desktop Session Host and click Add Features.

  12. In the Confirmation section, check the box next to Restart the destination server automatically if required if necessary and click Install.

  13. The installation will begin, and the server will automatically restart if necessary.

5. Audio Settings in the rdp.ini File

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. In the search box, type Remote Desktop Connection.

  4. Click Local resources.
  5. Under Configure remote audio settings, click Settings.

  6. Select Play on this computerRecord from this computerOK.

  8. Congratulations! The microphone is now connected from the local computer to the remote computer.
