Adding IP Addresses – Windows OS

His guide explains how to add additional IPv4 and IPv6 addresses to a Windows server.

Once an additional IP address has been ordered and allocated, it must be added to the server. You don't need to add just the primary IPv4 address.

Adding an IPv4 Address

  1. Connect to the server via RDP.
  2. Click the Network icon in the lower-right corner and select Network and Internet Settings (or Network and Sharing Center):
  3. Next, select Configure adapter settings (or Change adapter settings):
  4. Right-click the adapter and select Properties from the drop-down list:
  5. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
  6. In the window that opens, select Use the following IP address and enter the following values:

     

    IP address

    main server IP address

    Subnet mask

    255.255.255.0

    Main gate

    the main IP address of the server, instead of the last octet - 1

    Preferred DNS Server

    8.8.8.8

    Alternative DNS Server

    8.8.4.4
  7. Click Advanced.
  8. In the window that opens, click the Add button in the IP address section:
  9. Enter an additional IP address and subnet mask (255.255.255.0) → click Add.
  10. To save the changes, click Add → OK.

Adding IPv6 Addresses

  1. IPv6 addresses are added in the same way as IPv4.
  2. In step 5, select Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
  3. Next, enter the following values:

IPv6 address

main server IPv6 address

Subnet Prefix Length

64

Main gateway

2a03:6f00:3:3::1/96

Preferred DNS Server

2001:4860:4860::8888

Alternative DNS Server

2001:4860:4860::8844

What is a DNS server?

To add an additional IPv6 address, click Advanced. Then click Add in the IP address section and fill in all the fields in the form that opens.
