Installing and Configuring Hysteria for Android

This article explains how to set up and configure a VPN connection based on the Hysteria protocol on a Linux VPS in the Nekobox application for Android.

Hysteria is a high-performance, cross-platform proxy and VPN protocol built for fast, reliable, and censorship-resistant traffic. Hysteria runs on a modified QUIC protocol and supports SOCKS5, HTTP proxy, UDP/TCP forwarding, and Linux TProxy modes.

NekoBox is one of the best apps for installing and configuring a Hysteria-based VPN connection on a Linux VPS for Android. The advantage of using NekoBox is that, after changing the configuration, the app will automatically download and apply the latest version, eliminating the need for manual re-entry of the V2Ray code each time.

This guide explains how to set up the Hysteria protocol on a Linux VPS using NekoBox for Android.

This article assumes the following:

  • You have a Debian/Ubuntu VPS from is*hosting with SSH and root access.
  • The Nekobox/Nekoray app for Android is installed on your device.
  • In this case, you can skip straight to client configuration.
  • If any of the above prerequisites are not met, you may still use this guide — just follow most steps with minor adjustments as needed.

After installing NekoBox via Google Play or from the GitHub page for Android devices, download the file NekoBox-x.x.x-arm64-v8a.apk and follow these steps:

  1. Before using the NekoBox app, copy the link (like hy2://xxxxxxxxx@IP:443) to your clipboard from the new server information you received in the email immediately after activating your order.
  2. Open the NekoBox app and tap the menu menu icon in the upper left corner → Add Profile.

  3. In the drop-down menu that appears, select Import from Clipboard → paste the link (like hy2://xxxxxxxxx@IP:443).

  4. In the connection that has been created, tap the manage edit icon.

  5. In the connection configurations, paste the IP profile you received in the email immediately after activating your order and tap OK.

  6. Allow insecure connection by sliding the switch to the right.
  7. To save your changes, tap the checkmark checkmark in the upper-right corner.

  8. To activate the connection, tap the added configuration → tap the enable round icon.

  9. Congratulations! You have configured and installed the Hysteria protocol using the NekoBox app. To disconnect, repeat step 8.
